Wellmark BCBS: Put Care over Cost

Wellmark Board of Directors and CEO Cory Harris: Stop raising our premiums and denying us care!

Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield saw one of its best years during the COVID-19 pandemic with Wellmark Inc. seeing a revenue of $2,542,489,708 through premiums charged to everyday Iowans over the 2020 fiscal year. And yet, they are still trying to raise our premiums while offering us inadequate coverage – and sometimes outright denials of care.

Enough is enough. Iowans are tired of paying outrageous amounts of money to Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield for a chance they will cover our healthcare needs.

Through premiums, deductibles, and copays Wellmark’s insurance plans are bleeding Iowans dry. While our families and communities have experienced the hardest impact of this pandemic in the last year, Wellmark executives are merely looking to pad their pocketbooks.

Everyday people will see the negative economic and health impacts of this pandemic for years to come, and Wellmark needs to do better. That’s why we’re demanding a more fair and just system of care starting with the changes outlined below.

To the Wellmark Board of Directors and CEO Corey Harris:

  • Freeze premium increases for 3 years
    • Wellmark has raised premiums every year and enough is enough. We deserve healthcare that doesn’t take away thousands of dollars from our families and leave us in a position unable to meet our basic needs.
  • Stop denials of claims
    • Denying treatment for needed care is unconscionable and yet Wellmark continues to do so, even in a pandemic, because it takes away from their profits. Stop denying care and give the people what we paid for!
  • Halt political lobbying dollars
    • Wellmark must stop spending large amounts of our money to buy favor with our political representatives that are supposed to provide oversight of their corporation.
