Tell Starbucks to do better!

Kevin Johnson, CEO of Starbucks and Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross

Two black men were arrested in a Philadelphia Starbucks for waiting for a friend. A viral video shows that bystanders were vocal to the arresting officers that the men had done nothing. These men spent eight hours in a cage and suffered the humiliation of being escorted out of a busy Philadelphia location in handcuffs, not to mention the fear of notorious police brutality by the Philadelphia police.

Dear Mr. Johnson and Mr. Ross,

South Jersey Women for Progressive Change (SJWPC) connects, educates and empowers women to enact progressive change in our communities, state and nation. We are an intersectional action network that amplifies the voices of our members, engages in political discourse and actively works to dismantle systems of oppression. SJWPC stands behind Black Lives Matter Philadelphia in calling for the following demands:
1. We demand that Starbucks investigates all racial discrimination claims across all their stores.
2. We demand an official apology to the two men arrested and the community.
3. We demand the firing of the officers who arrested the two men.
4. We demand that Starbucks create and publicize a new policy that expressly disallows calling the police on citizens.

We pledge to use the economic power of our members, who provide an estimated $64,000 in direct sales each and every week at Starbucks, as we encourage our fellow members and stakeholders to seek out and patronize local black and minority-owned businesses, directing their dollars to build marginalized community’s economic strength in our region and support businesses that treat their black, brown and poor patrons with dignity and respect.
