The short explanation of this alert was:
The Bush Administration has announced that it intends to erase key components of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The proposed rule changes eliminate the requirement for independent scientific review of projects that could threaten endangered species, allowing federal agencies to estimate how projects impact endangered species in a vacuum. Additionally, the rule amendments would also inhibit government scientists’ ability to consider cumulative impacts of major projects.
Unlike previous efforts to limit or remove sections of the ESA, which were voted down by the United States Senate in 2005, this latest attack is being carried out through the Interior Department and requires no congressional approval. The proposed amendments are scheduled to be rushed through the administration subject to an abbreviated 30 day public comment period. In other words, there is just enough time to get these regulations passed before the November election.
Please write today to President Bush to let him know that these sorts of changes are unacceptable for the administration to make!
