Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Sierra Club New Jersey Chapter. The short explanation of this alert was: This time of year many people are looking forward to summer and trips to our oceans and coasts. Our oceans provide us with places to swim and surf, fish to eat, jobs and so much more. Yet our oceans are in crisis. Pollution, habitat degradation, overfishing, global warming and other problems are endangering marine life and causing depleted or contaminated fisheries, beach closings and "dead zones" devoid of marine life. The Oceans Conservation, Education and National Strategy for the 21st Century Act (Oceans-21) would provide common-sense solutions to help ensure that our oceans become and remain healthy -- regardless of what we throw at them. The bill would establish a national ocean policy to protect, maintain and restore the health of marine ecosystems and the resources they support, a way to implement that policy at the federal and regional levels, and the funding to do it. A vote on Oceans-21 is expected very soon in the House Natural Resources Committee. Representative Rush Holt is an important member of this Committee, so he needs to hear from as many constituents as possible before casting this critical vote. Please send a message urging Representative Holt to support Oceans-21 and to oppose any amendments that would weaken the bill. You can send a message to Representative Holt directly through this action alert. Alternatively, you can leave a message on his website, http://holt.house.gov/contact.shtml You can also reach him via the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121.
