The short explanation of this alert was:

Governor Corzine has to show New Jerseyans his commitment to clean water and natural resources in the Garden State. The Highlands Regional Master Plan does not adequately protect the Highlands and the drinking supply of 5.4 million people. The minutes of the Highlands Council are on his desk, and Corzine's veto would send the Council back to work to fix the plan and strengthen protection of drinking water.

On July 19, the Highlands Council voted 9-5 to approve the Highlands Regional Master Plan it has been working on since 2005. The Governor now has 30 days from July 24 to take action.

In its current version the plan threatens to undermine the goal of the Highlands Act - to restore, enhance, and protect this crucial water supply - and even reduces some regulations to protect clean water. The situation is now up to Governor Corzine.

The governor needs to demonstrate leadership and veto the Highlands Council minutes.
